Orache (Atriplex hortensis) is a wild plant of the Amaranth family, which originates from Asia and Europe, and that was used as a leafy vegatable before spinach became common. It can still be grown as an alternative for spinach in hotter climates. It exists in green- as well as red-leaved varieties.
